Our First Day in the Kitchen

We were nervous, we made a mess, and the dal was a little too salty. But it was the best meal we ever cooked — here is what happened.

It started on a rainy Sunday. Mum said we could try making dal on our own. Keshav was so excited he wore his apron before breakfast.

We gathered all the ingredients: toor dal, tomatoes, cumin seeds, turmeric, and ghee. No onion, no garlic — just pure, simple flavours the way we always cook at home.

The pressure cooker was the scariest part. We counted the whistles together — one, two, three, four. When the steam finally settled and we opened the lid, the dal smelled incredible.

For the tadka (tempering), we heated ghee in a small pan. When we added the cumin seeds they sizzled and popped loudly — Keshav jumped back and we both started laughing.

The final dish was slightly too salty (we added salt twice by accident) and the tomatoes could have cooked longer. But we ate every single drop. We cooked it ourselves, and that made it taste like the best thing in the world.

That day we learned something important: cooking is not about making it perfect. It is about being curious, being brave enough to try, and cleaning up your mess afterwards.
