What is Sattvik Cooking? A Simple Explanation

You have seen the word on our site, but what does it actually mean? We break down Sattvik cooking in simple language — the history, the principles, and why we love it.

"Sattvik" comes from the Sanskrit word "Sattva", which means purity, clarity, and balance. In Ayurveda — the ancient Indian science of health — food is classified into three categories based on how it affects our mind and body.

Sattvik food is pure, fresh, and nourishing. It includes fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lentils, dairy, nuts, and seeds. Sattvik food is believed to promote clarity of mind, calmness, and good health. It is the food of meditators, yogis, and spiritual practitioners.

Rajasic food is stimulating and energising — it includes onion, garlic, chili, and heavily spiced foods. In moderation, Rajasic food is fine, but in excess it is said to cause restlessness and agitation.

Tamasic food is heavy, dull, and dulling to the senses — it includes meat, alcohol, overly processed foods, and foods that have gone stale.

Our family eats Sattvik food not because we think other food is bad, but because it aligns with our values. We find that simple, fresh, well-spiced vegetarian food without onion and garlic makes us feel calm, light, and energised.

And honestly? Once you get comfortable with the spices, once you discover what hing can do, how ginger brightens a dish, how well-toasted cumin transforms a simple dal — you realise that Sattvik cooking is not a limitation at all. It is an invitation to become a more thoughtful, creative, and conscious cook.

That is what this website is about. Welcome to our Sattvik kitchen.
